What is a Pin?

CHESS TACTICS

A pin happens when a piece cannot move because it would expose a more important piece behind it. If the pinned piece moves, the piece behind it would be captured. Because of this, the pinned piece is stuck.

Note: in the example on the left - a pinned knight cannot move under any circumstances, because a piece behind it is The King.

Definition:

Pins are powerful because they limit your opponent’s movement. A pinned piece cannot protect other pieces or escape from attack. This gives you more control of the board and can help you win material.

Note: a good way to utilize a pin by adding more attackers to the pinned piece.
